The project

Project carried out during my final year of STI2D, SIN option, around the design and programming of a mobile rover inspired by exploration robots such as Perseverance.

The rover could move forward and backward while turning left or right. It was controlled from an Android phone via Bluetooth, using an application that allowed the user to control its movements, arm and gripper, as well as display data collected from its sensors.

The rover featured an articulated arm made up of several sections powered by servo motors. The arm could rotate, move up and down, while a gripper allowed it to pick up a small object.

Several sensors were used to measure temperature, humidity and battery level. An air quality measurement feature was also considered but could not be added due to time constraints.

The project was designed to allow the rover to move around and pick up a small object during the final demonstration.

Team roles
  • Programming (2 people) - rover programming and application development.
  • Me - programming the arm and gripper, managing the sensors, and developing the application features used to control them and display their data.
  • My teammate - programming the rover's movement.
  • Design (2 people) - design and construction of the rover's structure.
  • Electrics (1 person) - wiring and management of the project's electrical components.
What I did
  • Programmed the arm movements in Arduino using servo motors.
  • Managed the arm's rotation as well as its upward and downward movements.
  • Programmed the opening and closing of the gripper.
  • Integrated arm and gripper control into the Android application.
  • Managed and displayed data from the sensors: temperature, humidity and battery level.
  • Worked on part of the wiring required for the arm and sensors.
  • Established communication between the Android application and the Arduino Uno via Bluetooth.
  • Performed tests and adjustments to ensure the proper operation of the arm, gripper and sensors.
What I learned

This project was one of my first projects of this scale and gave me valuable experience in electronics and wiring. The first stages were challenging, particularly when learning how the different components worked and how to connect them to the program.

Through testing and adjustments throughout the project, I gradually gained a better understanding of the arm and sensor systems. Seeing the arm work correctly and being able to control the different components through the application was one of the most rewarding parts of the project.
